The Wild One

Make way for another former snooker champ named Fisher. Kelly is fearless, fun-loving and dead-set on toppling the Classic Tour's elite.

Story by Mike Geffner

The owner of an unusual piercing and a couple tattoos, the free-wheeling Kelly Fisher is keen on trying anything once - though no one thinks she'll stop at just one Classic Tour title.

It's become a familiar story by now: girl dominates women's snooker, girl becomes disillusioned with women's snooker, girl bolts women's snooker for America determined to clean up on the 9-ball tour. Except this girl is very different. We've not seen a snooker-turned-9-ball player like this before. I mean, the girl has edge. A wild, self-assured, go-for-it edge. If Karen Corr is muted to a shy whisper and Allison Fisher prim and properly understated, then Kelly Fisher is totally out there, all by herself, dangling by a rebellious thread. Pierced tongue and belly button (and at one point an eyebrow). A pair of tattoos (frog on hip; Celtic tribal symbol on lower back). Kung fu black belt. Bawdy sense of humor. Late-night party animal. Beer guzzler extraordinaire (even missing flights because of it). And spicy food freak. "I don't put on fronts," she says. "I try to be myself, and I'll do anything once."

In April, she scored a personal first on the WPBA's Classic Tour, and no one believes that it will happen just once. In just the seventh tour event of her fledgling pool career, she defeated the likes of Vivian Villarreal, Gerda Hofstatter and Karen Corr to win the West Coast Classic in Alpine, Calif.

Just to put that into perspective: Kelly Fisher became just the seventh woman to win a Classic Tour points event since June 2000. And, as a rookie, she did it faster than anyone since Allison Fisher took her first event in late 2005 in just her second appearance on tour.

"It was like winning a world championship," says Kelly Fisher of the West Coast win. She knows something about championship play; as the undisputed Queen of European snooker in the late 1990s and early 2000s, the 26-year-old, fast-talking, heavily accented Brit won six world titles and seven European snooker championships.
