In researching the behavior of cushions, I ran across this gem of a paper written by Professor Moore at the University of Michigan. Most of it was written just before Pearl Harbor, with a post-script from 1947, presumably after Prof Moore returned from a bit of atom-smashing.

A lot of the science can be skimmed over, but many of his non-technical comments regarding the bridge, grip, and stroke are very interesting.

Since I did not see this paper linked at Dr. Dave's or the SF Billiards site, I will provide it here:

MECHANICS OF BILLIARDS, AND ANALYSIS OF WILLIE HOPPE'S STROKE

That is an early version of a PDF I created of Moore's paper. Here is an updated version:

Bob,

Thanks for the link and document. I've added a link on my physics resources site here:

DeadCrab,

Thanks for the info. I hadn't seen this document before.

Regards,
Dave

Crusty -- U hav ruined my day, week perhaps. I planned to start serious billiards praktis today, for the Ozz championships in 4 weeks time, but i made the mistake of looking at your posting on madMoore.

Hell, madMoore's stuff all reminded me of madMac a few years ago -- balls swinging on wire/cotton to test aerodynamics and impakt, and cushion rebound -- and all of madMoore's talk about tilt and lean and vibration and shock and precession and spontaneous center of rotation -- all done before madMac woz born (July 47). Hmmmm -- i wonder -- did madMoore kick the bucket 9 months before July 1947??

Arthur sez some good stuff (most of it wrong) about -- constancy of force, varying bridge distance, open bridge v's closed bridge, flesh helping to stop miscues, etc. Lots of good original thinking i think, mostly wrong but.

This iz going to start weeks worth of argument and private messages. Schizms will lead to bloodshed. Karnt wait. madMac.
