The "Black Widow" Takes A Bite Out of the Competition
by Kirstin Pires
Jeanette "The Black Widow" Lee, the lone female entrant in the $150,000 Camel Pro 8-Ball Championship, remains undefeated after two days of competition, anding a 7-5 decision to top Filipino player, Santos Sambajon, and shocking 1997 Camel 8-Ball champ Danny Medina, Las Vegas, Nev., 7-2. Lee, who has missed only four balls so far in the tournament, takes on Ohioan Troy Frank at 2:00 p.m., and is gauranteed of at least a 17th place finish. Francisco Bustamante, Keil, Germany, is the only remaining former winner of the Camel 8-Ball event still in action, albeit on the left side of the charts.
The 1998 champ took a loss to Japan's Takeshi Okamura in the first round, but stayed alive after ousting 1999 Camel 8-Ball titlist Earl Strickland, Greensboro, N.C., 7-5 in the second round. Strickland's first round loss was to Hall-of-Famer Nick Varner, Orlando, Fla., 7-4.
With two days in the books, 24 players from the original 96-person field will remain. The double-elimination tournament wraps up Friday.
