Lee Set Free
by Kirstin Pires
After making an emphatic statement with a pair of decisive wins over top players Santos Sambajon and Danny Medina, Jeanette "The Black Widow" Lee collected a $2,000 17th place check from R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. this afternoon. Lee's exit was prompted by a 7- 4 loss to Troy Frank, and then to Japanese ace and world champion Kunihiko Takahashi, 7-4.
As the field narrows to the final four tonight, four players remain undefeated after afternoon rounds: Roger Griffis, Efren Reyes, Mika Immonen and Dave Matlock.
On the one-loss side, newly engaged George SanSouci handed a disappointment to Ray Shultz, 7-1, while Troy Frank was staging a come back against Jose Parica. Frank was sent to the loser's side by Roger Griffis, after a brief dispute on the 8-ball rules. Frank scratched on the break, and Griffis incorrectly took ball in hand anywhere on the table, rather than behind the headstring, resulting in a foul, which returned the cue ball to Frank, this time legally anywhere on the table. The dispute was quickly settled by referee David Vandenberghe, and Griffis went on to defeat Frank 7-5.
Takahashi advanced at the expense of countryman Satoshi Kawabata, 7-3, while Francisco Bustamante and Takeshi Okumura waged a war of attrition with Okumura emerging from the trenches 7-6.
