US STRETCHES LEAD TO 3-1 IN MOSCONI 2000

York Hall in the Bethnal Green section of London's east side would appear to be the perfect venue for the USA-Euro clash in the 2000 Acclaim Mosconi Cup. After all, the 100-year-old building has served as the site of thousands of boxing matches. But if the 2000 Mosconi Cup is going to be remembered as an epic heavyweight battle, the European squad is going to have to find a knockout punch somewhere.
Despite jostling his teams for Friday afternoon's double matches, European captain Ralf Souquet looked on in anguish as the American duo of Johnny Archer and Shannon Daulton whitewashed the Euro pairing of Steve Knight and Marcus Chamat, 5-0, giving Team USA a 3-1 lead in the race-to-12 tournament.
"We all agreed a change was needed after yesterday," said Souquet, who broke up the all-Brit team of Knight and snooker legend Steve Davis. "The players seem comfortable with the new arrangement, and I think we will keep it this way for the last set of doubles matches on Saturday." Archer and Daulton performed flawlessly in their Friday match, with Daulton
playing particularly well. "Shannon came with some excellent run-outs," said Archer. "He really got on a roll."
The second doubles session will pit Davis and Finland's Mika Immonen against
American captain Earl Strickland and Corey Deuel, at 23 the youngest player
in the event.
