Takeshi First to Reach

Japan's Takeshi Okumura became the first player to reach the
five-win mark at the $250,000 Victor Chandler World Pool
Championships in Cardiff, Wales this morning. The undefeated
Okumura knocked off Eric Wang of Chinese Taipei, 7-4, on the third
morning of the nine-day competition, which crowns a champion on
Sunday, July 9.
Undefeated Americans Earl Strickland and Jeremy Jones soon
followed with victories, advancing from group play into the field
of 64. Strickland edged the Philippines' Leonardo "the
Rattlesnake" Andam, 7-6, during group play, while Jones
knocked off Italy's Fabio Petroni, 7-2, to advance.
California-native Kim Davenport battles Thomas Engert of Germany
this evening on the main table for the top spot in Group 16. The
top four finishers in each six-man group advance to the round of
64.
