Top-seeded Johnny Archer and Allison Fisher opened with solid
victories as the opening round of the 2000 Billiard Congress of America
Open 9-Ball Championships got underway at the Riviera Hotel/Casino in Las
Vegas.
Archer, who finished third in the 1999 BCA Open Championships, pulled the
always dangerous Jose Parica of the Philippines in his opening match, but
prevailed 11-7.
Defending ladies' champ Fisher, meanwhile, posted a
lopsided 9-2 win over Steffany Nakagawa in her first match. Defending
men's
champ George SanSouci, the No.2 seed, struggled before prevailing over
Japan's Akikumo Toshikawa, 11-9.
The No.5 seed in both 64-player divisions weren't as lucky. Jeremy Jones
of
Texas, runner-up in the 1999 event, fell to Japan's Takashi Toda, 11-6,
while Loree Jon Jones, runner-up in the recent BCA U.S.
Open 14.1
Championships in New York, also lost to a Japanese entrant, Kimiko
Yamauchi, 9-8. The highest seed to lose a first-round match was
third-seeded Francisco Bustamante, who was shocked by Junior Harris,
11-4.
Sixteen players were seeded in each division of the $160,000 tournament,
which concludes with semifinal matches Friday taped for future airing on
ESPN, and championship matches Saturday afternoon.
