TOP SEEDS ADVANCE IN LAS VEGAS
Mike Panozzo
Thursday, May 18 3:30 PM CST

The top seeds advanced Wednesday night at the 2000 Billiard Congress of America Open 9-Ball Championships in Las Vegas. Johnny Archer, the top seed in the 64-player men's division, rolled to an impressive 11-6 win over recent

Hall of Fame inductee Buddy Hall. The ladies' No.1 seed, Allison Fisher, continued her quest in defense of her 1999 BCA title with an easy 9-3 win over Canadian Kathy MacDonald as the winner's bracket moved to the final eight in action at the Riviera Hotel & Casino.

Archer and Fisher were joined in the winner's bracket quarterfinals of the $160,000 tournament by most of the high seeds in each division. Third-seeded Francisco Bustamante, who dropped his first match to Junior Harris and was subsequently eliminated by Dutchman Alex Lely, was the only player among the top four seeds in each division to fail to reach the winner's bracket quarterfinals. Second-seeded George SanSouci, the defending champion, and fourth-seeded Earl Strickland remain undefeated, as do Gerda Hofstatter, Karen Corr and Vivian Villarreal, the nos. 2, 3 and 4 seeds, resepectively, in the women's division.

Winner's bracket matches Wednesday night did feature one significant upset, as Sweden's Marcus Chamat surprised sixth-seeded Efren Reyes, 11-9.

Winner's bracket matches continue Thursday afternoon. Both divisions will be pared down to the final four Thursday, with Friday's semifinal matches being taped for future airing on ESPN, and the championship matches scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
