Mike Panozzo
Friday, May 19, 11:30 AM CST

The 1999 champion in both the men's and women's division of the Billiard
Congress of America Open 9-Ball Championships earned the right to defend their
titles by advancing Thursday night to Saturday's championship matches at the
Riviera Hotel/Casino in Las Vegas.
In a match-up of top
seeds, No.1 seed Allison Fisher dominated second-seeded Gerda Hofsatter, 9-2, to
reach the title match in the $160,000 event, while second-seeded George "Ginky"
SanSouci held off top-seeded Johnny Archer 11-7 for his shot at the 2000 crown.
Thursday night's matches featured
numerous hill-hill battles, with both winner's bracket semifinals in the women's
division reaching a case game.
Fisher came from behind to upend Vivian
Villarreal, 9-8, while Hofstatter let a two game lead slip away before closing
out Karen Corr, 9-8. Meanwhile, in the quarterfinals of the men's division
loser's bracket, Efren Reyes pulled out an 11-10 win over Tony Ellin, while
Finland's Mika Immonen scored an 11-10 victory over Chinese Taipei's Fong Pang
Chao.
In the semifinal of the men's winner's
bracket, Archer put an abrupt halt to Swedish sensation Marcus Chamat's unbeaten
streak with a sound 11-1 thumping.
Defending champion SanSouci dumped hot
Shannon "The Cannon" Daulton, 11-4, in the other semi.
Friday's loser's bracket semifinals
will pit Karen Corr against Jennifer Chen in the women's division, with the winner
facing Hofstatter for a spot against Fisher in the finale, while Immonen
will face Efren Reyes in the men's bracket semifinal, with the winner advancing
against Archer for the right to meet SanSouci in the championship match.
The BCA Open title is worth $15,000 to
each champion, as well as an expense-paid trip for two to Italy.
