Francisco Bustamante is in the pole position for his second win on the Camel Pro Billiards Series after dispatching Rodolfo Luat 9-8 in a tight, yet sloppy semifinal match of the Denver Open.
Bustamante and Luat - although fellow Filipinos - rarely play each other except in tournament competition, which may have explained the narrow margins in the match score. "We both play our own game," said Bustamante, "but we didn't play very good. I don't
know why."
Before the match started, Bustamante thought luck would end up deciding the fate of the match, as both players shoot at the same speed. In the end, it was Luat making the last mistake of the match. Up 8-7, Luat missed a slight cut on the 7 into the side,
giving Bustamante an easy run-out. Bustamante then broke and ran out to win the final game.
Bustamante won his first Camel event in Nashville at the J.O.B. Kasson Pro Open, beating Ralf Souquet for the $10,000 first prize. Bustamante and Luat are 8-9 in the Camel points race. If either player wins, they will finish in third place.
Luat falls to the one-loss final and will play the winner of the Jose Parica/Buddy Hall test.
