Although it's surrounded by all the diversions of Disney World, the Ultimate 9-Ball Challenge in the ESPN Club on Disney's Boardwalk drew near-capacity crowds during today's single-elimination matches for the 1998 finals.
The 6 p.m. matches featured Allison Fisher and Ewa Laurance on the women's side and Australian Eddie Charlton and David Howard on the men's side. The matches started slowly; both tables had to wait as a result of the two-table format, and both Fisher and
Laurance seemed out of stride as their match began; both women missed easy shots early in the match.
On the women's side, Laurance jumped to an early 2-0 lead, though Fisher battled back to tie at 4. From there, Fisher took full advantage of the table, and won, 7-4. This victory takes Fisher one step closer to the finals of the 1998 event; tommorrow she
matches up against Nesli O'Hare, who beat Kerry Hartsfield in today's noon match. Nikki Benish also bested Aileen Pippen, she will play the winner of tonight's 8 p.m. match between Jennifer Chen and Bonnie Arnold.
On the men's side, Howard beat Charlton 7-5 to advance to tommorrow's match against CJ Wiley. Wiley beat Tommy Kennedy in today's noon match, and Taiwan's Kun Fang Lee bested Mika Immonen, giving him a spot in Friday's noon match. He will play the winner
of tonight's 8 p.m. match between Ralf Souquet and Max Eberle.
