After dropping his opening match, Philippine sensation Efren Reyes rebounded with a decisive
13-3 win over Belgium's Raymond Hauge in action Thursday afternoon at the WPA World 9-Ball
Championships in Arlington Heights, Ill. Reyes, who lost in the first round to American Jimmy Wetch, 13-7, struggled early on in his match with Hauge. Lackadaisical play and several missed shots by Reyes kept Hauge close at 5-3. But the German failed to take advantage of the mistakes, and Reyes eventually got his game on track and rattled off eight straight wins. Reyes, former Pro Billiards Tour world 8-ball and world 9-ball champ, awaits the loser of the Roger Griffis/Vincent Facquet, and is scheduled to play Friday afternoon at 3:00 (Central Daylight Time). In winner's bracket matches in the 64-player men's field, Wetch advanced with a 13-7 win over Puerto Rican Louis Lassalle, and Filipino Francisco Bustamante dumped Germany's Herbert Friedemann, 13-4. In another early-round upset, 1994 WPA champ Fong Pang Chao of Taiwan fell, 13-8, to Akikumo Toshikawa of Japan. |
