Like clockwork, the top seeded players on the WPBA
Classic Tour advanced to the third round of the
winner's bracket at the Connelly Players
Championship in Valley Forge, Pa.
Top-seeded Allison Fisher once again proved her
dominance, not only through her scores (she won
9-3 and then 9-1 over Aileen Pippin last
evening)but also in speed. Fisher ended her
matches at least 20 minutes earlier than any of
the other matches that started at the 7:30 and
10:30 pm slots. This evening, Fisher may slow it
down a bit, as she faces Helena Thornfeldt, who
has had a pretty easy road up to now, also. Her
first two wins came quickly, as she dispatched
Vicki Paski, 9-4, and Maureen Seto, 9-3. They meet
at 6 pm this evening.
Jennifer Chen had an 8-2 lead over May Guarino in
their second-round match but had to fight off a
strong charge from the veteran who eventually lost
9-6. Chen and Guarino struggled in the middle
stages of the match, missing easy balls but also
playing deft safety shots on each other. Chen
faces Vivian Villarreal tonight, also at 6 pm.
Villarreal won a lively, entertaining match
against Loree Jon Jones, who fought the Texas
Tornado tooth and nail, only to fall 9-7. The
crwods seemed most interested in this match, as
cheers for both players eminated from the stands.
Villarreal's aggressive style almost lost her the
match. At 7-7, Villarreal left herself with a
razor-thin cut on the 9 ball into the corner,
which gave her brief fits, but her attacking style
prevailed as she made the shot look simple.
The other 6 pm matches feature Ewa Laurance versus
Gerda Hofstatter and Jeanette Lee against Nesli
O'Hare, who provided the only upsetoft he
tournamet to date, knocking off seventh-seeded
Robin Dodson, 9-8.
