It's hard to get a scoop at a WPBA tournament any
more. There's just so few surprises anymore.
While many surprises occur in the early rounds,
the Classic Tour is reminiscent of the NCAA
College Basketball tournament: minor and major
upsets spice up the qualifying rounds, but in the
end, the best teams in the country end up at the
top.
Allison Fisher is the University of North Carolina
to Gerda Hofstatter's Utah Utes, yet not far away
is Jeanette Lee's Duke Blue Devils and Vivian
Villarreal posing as a spoiler in the Kentucky
Wildcats. Fisher and Hofstatter will square off at
3pm today to earn a spot in the title match of the
Connelly Players Championship in Valley Forge, Pa.
The loser will wait out the loser's bracket fights
that started at noon and feature upstarts Jennifer
Chen vs. Helena Thornfeldt (Stanford and Rhode
Island to exhaust this metaphor) in one noon match
while Lee and Dawn Hopkins, a major surprise in
the tournament, battle for survival at the same
time.
Fisher had to stave off a charge from Thornfeldt
in the 6 pm matches last night, finally beating her
on the hill, her toughest match of the tournament.
he then went on to dispense of Villarreal rather
easily, 9-3. Hofstatter, on the other hand, didn't
swet her match as badly, beating Nesli O'Hare,
9-6, to earn a spot in the winner's final.
Villarreal and Nesli O'Hare wait in the wings in
the loser's bracket quarterfinals.
