NO REPEAT IN CARDIFF; CHAO ELIMINATED
by Mike Mazek Jul 18, 2001, 6:57 PM EST

Little-known Brit Anthony Ginn capped off a day of upsets at the 2001 Admiral World Pool Championship on Wednesday, knocking out 2000 champion Fong-Pang Chao, 9-8, to advance to the Round of 32 on Thursday. The Taiwanese champion, who scored the $50,000 winner-take-all International Challenge of Champions less than a week earlier, joined 2000 runner-up Ismael Paez on his way out of the tournament. Paez suffered a 9-7 defeat at the hands of World Junior Champion Dmitri Jungo, who holds a perfect 8-0 record during the tournament. Billiard Congress of America 9-ball champion Cory Deuel was eliminated earlier in the day.

Earl Strickland was the only player among the top four finishers from last year to advance to the Round of 32, edging Ramil Gallego, 9-8.
