IMMONEN WINS THE DERBY
by Mike Mazek Jan 13, 2002, 11:05 AM EST

Mika Immonen overcame several mistakes to come away with the Derby City Classic 9-Ball Division on Saturday night. The Finnish reigning 9-ball world champion edged out Buddy Hall, 7-6, in the final to claim $9,000.

"To win the first tournament of the year feels great," said Immonen, who at one point in the final led 5-0. "Normally a 5-0 lead is tough to overcome. But Buddy had a great comeback. I feel lucky that he missed."

Jose Parica won Master of the Table honors, finishing tied for seventh place in both the 9-ball and bank-pool fields, and coming in second in the one-pocket tournament behind Cliff Joyner. Larry Price captured the 9-ball bank championship.
