Jeanette Lee and Cory Deuel return to Las Vegas to defend their titles.
The Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, is abuzz with activity. The 2002 BCA Open 9-Ball Championships began there on Sunday; the event features a full 64-player field in both men?s and women?s divisions. The format is double elimination, with races to nine for the women and races to 11 for the men.
Jeanette Lee and Cory Deuel are last year?s reigning champs, and they?ve come back this year to defend their titles. Deuel is seeded number one for this year, and Lee is seeded number three.
Other players who will be at the tables in Vegas range from the famous to the obscure. Hall-of-famers such as Buddy Hall, Lou Butera and Nick Varner will be there, playing alongside four players in each division who gained entrance via regional qualifiers. Some of these regional entrants include Janet Atwell, who dominated the Southeastern Amateur Ladies? tour this last season; Sam Monday, who earned his qualifying spot at a Viking Tour stop in Charlotte, N.C.; and Billy Young, who won his spot at JOBs in Madison, Tenn.
Play began Sunday afternoon, and will continue through Saturday, May 18. Semi-final and final match play will be held during the last two days of the event.
