Polish Student Schools American Daulton
Mike Panozzo
Wednesday, July 5, 9:44 AM CST

Twenty-year-old student Radoslaw Babica of Poland pulled off the first major surprise at the Victor Chandler World Pool Championship in Cardiff, Wales, Tuesday when he shocked American star Shannon "The Cannon" Daulton, 9-8, in the round of 64. Babica barely squaked into the final 64-player portion of the $250,000 tournament with just two wins in his five round-robin group matches. Daulton, meanwhile, earned the No.13 seed for the 64-player knockout phase by leading his six-player group with four wins. Several crucial errors by the American in the case game allowed Babica to finish the upset.

In other Round of 64 action, Germany's Thomas Engert was upset by Filipino Leonardo Andam, 9-3, while 21-year-old English surprise Chris Melling proved his group-winning performance in the earlier stage was no fluke by pounding Italian Fabio Petroni, 9-2.

Action in the round of 64 continues through Wednesday, with the tournament reaching its conclusion Sunday, July 9. The champion will earn $60,000.
