World Cup of Pool to Kick Off in Rotterdam
Aug 9, 2007, 10:52 AM

Matchroom Sport has announced the second annual PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool will take place Sept. 25-30 in Rotterdam, Holland. The event features two-man teams from 32 countries battling in a single-elimination bracket.

Last year in Newport, Wales, the event made its debut with the powerhouse team of Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante claiming the title for the Philippines. Both world champions have agreed to return to defend their title.

The United States squad will have a different look in 2007 after finishing second at last year's event. Rodney Morris will be back representing his country, but Earl Strickland will be replaced by Corey Deuel.

The format has been slightly tweaked as sets will be winner breaks throughout the tournament. Also, races will be to eight for the first two rounds, nine for the quarter and semifinals and 11 for the final.

Prize money remains unchanged from last year's event. The total purse stays at $250,000 — $30,000 per man for the champions and $1,500 for all first-round departures.

Currently, 31 of the 32 slots for teams have been filled, including two Dutch teams for the host nation. Hong Kong, one of last year's surprise quartfinalists, is not among the listed participants.

The biggest darkhorse from last year's tournament, the Vietnamese team will stick with the duo of Luong Chi-dung and Phanh Nam Nguyen.

Tickets are modestly priced between €2.50 and €4. Contact Matchroom Sport for information, or visit their Web site at www.matchroomsportdvd.com.
