Montal Wins Winnipeg Canadian 9-Ball Stop
Apr 28, 2008, 12:00 PM

Montal (top) ended Beardy's streak of upsets in the final.
Three weeks after a disappointing 11-2 loss in the final of a Canadian 9-Ball Tour event, Edwin Montal was back in the final match. This time, the veteran prevailed, topping Felix Beardy, 11-8, to take his first title of the season.

Montal didn't take the shortest route to the final at last weekend's Canadian 9-Ball event — held April 25-27 at Bourbon Street Billiards in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Dropping a hill-hill fourth-round match against rising star Jason Klatt, Montal won five straight on the left side to earn a spot in the final.

On the winners' side, Felix Beardy cut a path to the final that sent many of the tour's top names left. Beardy, whose previous top finish this season was tied-for-17th, beat both Tyler Edey and Klatt, 9-5, to move into the hot-seat match. There, he faced Erik Hjorleifson. Beardy eked past the second-ranked Hjorleifson, 9-7.

In the final, Montal edged the upstart, closing out the single-set match, 9-7.
