Matchroom Pool Mosconi Cup
Player: Joshua Filler
Event: Matchroom Pool Mosconi Cup
Location: London, U.K.
Date: December 6, 2025

Fresh off the 2025 Mosconi Cup, where Team Europe trounced its way to an 11-3 victory in the transatlantic competition, plenty of conversation has focused on the viability of an event where the Continental side has been so dominant. But in Team USA's defense, perhaps only partially, the Americans were only a few crucial shots away from a much more competitive event. Hypotheticals aren't worth real consideration—one changed result in a match would impact the following events—but they might be especially unnecessary in this case.
The final score was the final score—and this month's Stroke of Genius shows just why that end result was the conclusion. After trading safeties in a doubles match with Team Europe's Joshua Filler and Moritz Neuhausen facing Team USA's Fedor Gorst and Skyler Woodward, Filler faced the situation shown in the diagram. After Gorst rattled the 3 in the lower left corner, Team Europe had an angle on the object ball, but position on the 4 was hardly natural.
Filler didn't have many options — the 4 ball was tucked behind the 7 and 9 balls. But without a hint of hesitation, the German killer played the perfect speed and perfect angle off the 3. The red ball dropped straight in the bottom left corner, while the cue ball headed up-table and back to the right of the 4 ball. It fell in perfect shape for the 4 ball in the same pocket as the 3, giving Neuhausen a chance to play position on the 5.
The would've-could've-should've for Team USA was undoubtedly significant, but Filler's excellence in this case is a reminder that Team Europe offered no quarter.
