CHANCES ARE you or someone you know is mystified by English. Deflection, squirt and swerve can intimidate someone who is just starting to use sidespin. This is one way to show a beginner what can happen with English.

With the 1 and 8 balls frozen to the long rail and the cue ball one ball’s width out, this shot is impossible with a center-ball hit. Incorporate right English, however, and even an absolute beginner can bounce the cue ball off the 1 ball. Aim as close to the 8 as possible, and the cue ball will drift right. [Bob Jewett]
