Position: Three Choices
Here’s a classic position drill from the notebooks of BD Contributing Editor Robert Byrne, also found in “Byrne’s New Standard Book of Pool & Billiards.” It gives you three distinct options for position from a fairly short, almost straight-in shot on a short rail — and without having to resort to left- or right-hand English. Start by placing the cue ball and 3 ball as shown. Shot 1 calls for soft draw (see inset chart for cue-tip placement) along the vertical axis. Shot 2 requires soft follow, and Shot 3 is a bank that needs more intense follow and a firmer stroke. Practice these shots to give you more angles and options for your next move.
