August: Sunlight Peeking Through
August 2020

The 2020 World 10-Ball Championship, canceled.

The 2020 U.S. Open Pool Championship, postponed.

The 2020 World Pool Masters, canceled.

The 2020 World Cup of Pool, postponed.

The 2020 International Open Championships, postponed.

The 2020 All Japan Pool Championships, canceled.

To say that 2020 has been a disappointment to pool fans would be gross understatement.

And, at this point, we aren’t asking for a lot. Just give us something to smile about. Something to look forward to. Something that will lift our spirits instead of sucking more wind out of our sails.

Thankfully, a few pieces of good news finally came across the transom in July.

First, the Billiard Congress of America and the United States Billiard Media Association released news that Kelly Fisher was elected into the BCA Hall of Fame. If any news could give the sport a boost, it would be recognition of Fisher’s achievements on and off the table. Few players are as well-liked and respected as the gracious Brit. Few players have compiled a resume as strong as Fisher’s, with three world titles and countless wins, many against the relentless gauntlet of talent produced and playing in Asia. And even fewer players have had to endure the health issues that Fisher has endured and have had the drive to return to world championship form.

Not surprisingly, the 2020 BCA Hall of Fame Banquet has also been postponed and Fisher will have to wait until some time in 2021 to be formally inducted. But when she finally is officially welcomed into the club, it will be an event worth attending.

Also offering a glimmer of hope was the Matchroom announcement that American Justin Bergman and Russian Fedor Gorst earned automatic spots in the 2020 Mosconi Cup. The tantalizing teaser, hinting that the sport’s most entertaining event may actually take place in the calendar year, immediately led to spirited debate and renewed enthusiasm on social media.

Thanks! We’ll take any kind of good news we can get.
