July: A Bad Rap?
July 2012
Q. Do TV networks discriminate against pool? How can a sport that’s so popular not be listed as a choice on ESPN’s menu? Dish Network also doesn’t have it listed.
Carlos Diaz Soler; Indianapolis, Ind.

A. I doubt there is a concerted effort to discriminate. I do know that while billiards is one of the biggest participation sports in America, it’s far from the biggest spectator sport. But it certainly has grown and you make a great point. I think I’ll work on that this month — maybe they’ll listen the the Black Widow?!

Q. How can I improve when using English?
Kevin Westfall; Castlegar, British Columbia

A. This might sounds crazy but I shoot short stop shots straight-in with English. Use the measle cue ball so you can see how much spin you produce. Try to stop the cue ball in place while it’s still spinning. Eventually, your cue ball will spin like crazy at all different speeds and distances. But start with short stop shots in the side pocket and go from there.
