Q. Iíve tried to get in shape in the last year. With your history of back problems, how important is it that you take care of yourself physically? What kind of stuff do you do to make sure youíre feeling your best before and during a tournament?

A. There are four main things I focus on: stretching, cardio fitness, strength training and a healthy diet. These four things are important, and especially so for me considering my back. Pool can be a physically demanding activity, so I need to be limber to reach things more easily. I need cardio for endurance and maintain my energy level. I need strength training to stay balanced, particularly when I have to stretch and reach a shot on one leg. And, of course, healthy eating just makes you feel (and function) better. It may sound crazy, but I donít think I could have endured all these major surgeries without serious attention to each of these four areas. When Iím at a tournament, itís also important that I pay attention to the regularity of my eating ó how many hours before a match, how much, etc. I hope you find what works for you!
