Q: I've noticed that most players now have a cue extension and tend to use that more often than a mechanical bridge. Do you prefer using a bridge or stretching with a longer cue? Any other suggestions for hard-to-reach shots?

A: I prefer to stretch and have a longer cue because it allows me to position my body the same way as I normally would. When I use the bridge, I have to stroke the cue differently, with my forearm parallel to the ground and right elbow sideways. With a longer cue, I can keep my arm in alignment and have my forearm perpendicular to the floor. I always played a game of straight pool with an older gentleman, and the game was that he could play normally, but I had to play lefthanded or with a bridge. It was very competitive and fun! We only played to 50 points because we were both so bad that it took forever to finish each rack. It's good to practice both with the bridge and opposite-handed because there are times when one way or the other is the only way you can reach the shot.
