November: Thin Cut Aiming System
November 2018

Q: Do you have a particular aiming system for thin cuts? Do you use English? Stun?

Cody Deaken, Omaha, Neb.

A: I donít have an aiming system. Iím familiar with some of them, but I was already fairly developed in my aiming by the time I learned of them. I would say that most novices donít understand the difference between the aiming point and the contact point. The Ghost Ball aiming method explains it. It indicates to us where the cue ball needs to be for the proper contact point on the object ball. Most people donít compensate enough for the difference between the aiming point and the contact point. It took a lot of practice for me. Start with straight in shots and move the cue ball a little at a time for thinner cuts. It will help you understand the cuts. And, yes, I use English, but only when necessary until you really get the hang of it. I put a lot of value into stun. It gives you a better understanding of the tangent line and how to use the vertical axis to change how the cue ball moves an object ball. It is the coolest and most frustrating thing to master. I get excited just thinking about it, but then Iím a dork!
