VIDEO: Pool Fundamentals

August: Positive Influence
August 2011
Q. Help! My mom thinks pool is a waste of my time. It's not that I don't study and get my work done. Pool's a way to relax. How do I get her to understand it's good for me?
Juliette B.; Bakersfield Calif.

A. When I was a kid, my mom hated me playing pool! She was concerned I was wasting time that could've been better used developing a skill that would eventually pay my bills. I can tell you now, as a mom, I look at everything around my children. Do their friends keep them out late (as teenagers) or peer pressure them into things? Or do they help them study, volunteer or even just hang out at home (without having to spend a ton of money whenever they hang out)? If you still get to school on time the next day, are you cranky or tired from being out late? Because if so, I'm going to look at what's distracting you. Try proposing that she back off your pool if you raise your grades and act more responsible than ever. If you can do this, she will definitely feel this hobby is good for you. She will see that it makes you happy and pool as a stress reliever helps you stay on track with your responsibilities!
