July: Work Boots?
July 2010
Q. I was watching an old video of you playing on TV. I am curious about how your shoes or boots affect your shooting? Can you adjust your stance from heels to shoes quickly and easily?
Bill; Arvada, Colo

A. I used to wear heels more often than I do now. Fashion has always been a part of me - and my approach to my game. But unfortunately, as time goes on, my back requires me to wear lower heels. If I know I'm going to be on my feet for an extended period of time, I tend to choose shoes with only one- or two-inch heels. But when I switch my footwear from one day to the next, I don't feel that I make any real conscious adjustment to accommodate the height of my heels. At this point in my career, I'm able to adapt my game to the given situation without too much though. But one thing I do know, my back wears out much more quickly when I'm in higher heels, so if I'm playing more than one match, it's important to plan accordingly. Bill, I would suggest you stay away from heels in general though. People might pay more attention to your footwear than your game - and we wouldn't want that!
