VIDEO: Pool Fundamentals

September: Mental or Physical?
September 2016

Q: When your game is at the point at which you can bank balls, hit kick shots and use a fair amount of English, but you keep missing easy shots, whatís the solution? Is the problem mental or physical?

John Tyler, Phoenix, Ariz.

A: Ha! I canít tell you how amazed I am when that happens. I still manage to miss straight-in shots now and then, and it really catches me by surprise. Pool is equal parts mental and physical. Itís not unusual to approach a tough shot with maximum focus. We study the shot hard, carefully go through the entire pre-shot routine and make the commitment necessary to execute the shot. On simple shots, however, we take so much for granter and end up skipping some of those steps. I catch myself taking my eye off the ball, looking ahead to where I want the cue ball to wind up. What we have to realize is that every shot takes only the slightest lapse in concentration to miss. I always say that anyone at the pro ranks can make tough shots, but the champions are the players who miss the fewest easy shots.
