Frozen Ball Shots

There are two ways to pocket a ball that's frozen on the rail; you either hit the ball first or you hit the rail first. Both ways work fine, but there is a big difference in how the cue ball reacts after hitting the object ball. When you go rail-first, the entry angle of contact between the cue ball and the object ball changes. It is difficult to show the difference to students because it's barely visible to the human eye. To give students a better idea about the difference between hitting ball-first and hitting rail-first, I move the object ball 2 inches off the rail. I tell them to act as if the ball were on the rail. This method gives them a clearer view of the principle at play here. Now, when you hit the ball first, you can see the angle that the cue ball takes into the rail. And when you hit rail-first, you can see the angle the cue ball takes into the object ball. As you can see in Diagram One, striking the 8 ball first (with high left) will send the cue ball into the side rail and down to the end rail. This is the path you would take if you were trying to play shape for the 9 ball. Because the high left English widens the angle off the rail, the cue ball will travel four rails for position. If you send the cue ball into the rail first, you can see that the angle coming off the rail and into the object ball is different, sending the cue ball in the path of the corner pocket and a probable scratch. A lot of players don't see that, or aren't able to tell if they are hitting the ball first or the rail first. You have to master how to hit the ball first with spin because it eliminates deflection. Naturally, because you are using left spin, you have to aim to hit the 8 ball a little fuller. (When you impart left or right English onto the cue ball, it will not go perfectly straight off of the tip.)
